In many AMR and AMI projects, the default approach is still:
Replace everything. Deploy fast. Scale immediately.
But in practice, this often leads to the highest level of risk.
Full replacement strategies typically result in:
• High CAPEX
• High operational risk
• System-wide disruption
• Slow time-to-value
When issues occur, they affect the entire deployment —
leaving little room for adjustment.
This is why more utilities are shifting toward a different approach:
Phased deployment.
Instead of replacing all meters at once, successful projects:
✔ Start with pilot areas
✔ Validate communication and data stability
✔ Adjust deployment strategies
✔ Scale gradually based on proven performance
This approach allows utilities to reduce risk, control investment, and maintain operational continuity.
In smart metering, success is not defined by how fast you deploy —
but by how reliably the system performs over time.
